The weekend we have all been looking forward – it finally arrived. Eighteen months of frustration and delay. Seems like a lifetime away....
From 8am on Saturday, the club was a hive of activity, and that lasted all day Saturday and a large chunk of Sunday too.
Groups of excited minis and juniors, and their equally excited parents, met at the club, and headed off, in true convoy style, to Butts Park Arena, for the club’s ‘Takeover Day’, to watch the famous Coventry Club take on the recent arrivals to the city in the most local of local derbies. Before that, however, the minis and juniors played on the hallowed turf of BPA, were coached by Cov’s players, enjoyed the facilities. What a way to start their season.
During the morning, still at the club, many different people were putting last minute touches to the club, some cleaning, signs going up outside and inside the club, new water bottles, food preparation… So much work, and these were the finishing touches.
The afternoon saw our senior XV host higher-level Old Wheats and, although the result didn’t go Keresley’s way, there were many positives, including four debutants, playing their first game in Keresley’s colours. Welcome to the club, gentlemen. Old Wheats showed us what we perhaps need to do at a higher level, but, as always, our pack was in control in the scrums, line outs worked on occasions, and some of our approach play worked well. Our next friendly against Bedworth will show us, again, our progress.
Saturday evening showed the reason why players play rugby: there was singing, there was dancing, and there was ale. What more do most rugby players want and need? The Keresley Way.
On Sunday it was the turn of our minis and juniors again, to steal the limelight. Training, with fun , laughter and some challenging activities, all delivered in a safe and controlled environment, allowed our youngsters to improve their rugby ability, gain a better understanding of our great game, and look forward to seeing their friends again next time. With food available from the kitchen again – a super day.
Once again, the volunteers and players of Keresley RFC showed why we are the club we are.
One club, our club, your club.
Roll on next week!
