Another Well Deserved Win for The Ks

Another Well Deserved Win for The Ks

Ian Coulson3 Mar 2014 - 21:07

The Ks played host to the Cov Tech and took he points for the second time this season.

Our last meeting with Cov Tech saw a few yellow cards and some fairly poor discipline, but we came out on top. The Ks, refreshed from a break and on the back of a very convincing win could have been forgiven for thinking Cov Tech would be a walk over, but it certainly wasn't the case.

Morris, Kieran McDonald, Leigh Perry and Ryan McGinley adding to our growing squad making selection choices less harrowing and giving us a few sub options in the form of Luie Riva, Ryan Smyth, Tommy Marsh and Morris.

The game proved to be as rough as we expected but the Ks showed great discipline and thanks to some no nonsense refreeing, this game was a lot cleaner than our last.

It was a real surprise to everyone when Cov Tech were actually performing well and rattled the Ks with an early try.

Tech were strong in the scrum and were turning over often and were coming out on top in loose ball situations.

After 15 minutes, James Coyle released Will Patrick through the centre, who in turn, passed off to Brendan McNally Jr. to level the score.

With the score level, the Ks took the play deep into the Tech 22 with Ryan McGinley making a well, timed run only to be wrestled (by the head) to the ground. Luckily, Joel Pickering was in support and the Ks kept the ball. A well timed kick set Brendan McNally Jr. free only to be dragged off the pitch for a line out on the 5 m line.

Here's where it got dirty, Tech losing a player for smashing Joel Pickering whilst holding Will Patrick up for the line out. Then another 2 yellows were handed to 2 of Tech's front row for violent conduct and for arguing with the ref. Amazingly, Tech defended the ball away. The Ks found themselves with a 3 man overlap, within a few minutes, Spencer Atkins found himself with a yellow card.

With 2 of their front row out of the game, the ref had no choice but to have the scrums as uncontested, a strange arrangement, but did allow Tech to find a gap in the defence and they managed another try with 3 guys still in the sin bin.

Luckily, Ray Wood scored a penalty on the whistle reducing the gap to 2 points. Half time: 8-10.

The game restarted hard and fast, with Leigh Perry picking up an injury and Tommy Marsh taking to the pitch for a well behaved half.

The Ks narrowly took the lead when a penalty was conceded by Cov Tech, an easy kick for Ray Wood.

The Ks were certainly more dominant after the break, but were the victim of handling errors, but were coming up on top in open play. Brendan McNally Jr. picked up the ball in the Ks half and beat 6 tackles to run clear for a brilliant individual try. Converted by Ray Wood and crucially, giving the Ks a little breathing space. 18-10 with 15 minutes to go.

Cov Tech forced ahead again and made it a little close for a while when they scored a try and conversion reducing the gap to a single point.

Tech's discipline rocked again and they lost another player to the sin bin. With a player up and some great sustained pressure, the Ks put the game beyond doubt with seconds to go with James Coyle scoring a well deserved try.

The Ks are on tour next week, so no game while they rampage Fareham. Keep an eye on here and Facebook for the next fixture.
